A dedication ceremony was held at noon on Thursday, May 31, 2001, at the Dominion Tower Plaza in Pittsburgh, PA, for the official state historical marker commemorating the signing of the Pittsburgh Agreement.  The Agreement, which was signed near this site on May 31, 1918, provided the impetus for President Woodrow Wilson to champion Czechoslovak independence at the end of World War I.  Tomas Garrigue Masaryk, who later became the first president of Czechoslovakia, was also one of the signatories.  The historical marker will be installed at the corner of Penn and Seventh Avenues.  Sponsoring organizations are the University of Pittsburgh Czechoslovak Classroom Committee, the Czechoslovak Society of Arts and Science (SVU), Western Pennsylvania Slovak Cultural Association, Senator John Heinz Pittsburgh Regional History Center, and the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission in Harrisburg.

Dr. Margaret Heřmánek Peaslee and Ms. Cynthia J. Andes, faculty members at the University of Pittsburgh at Titusville (UPT), attended the ceremony.  These faculty, and Dr. Linda A. Winkler, will be directing a Study Abroad Program to the Czech Republic in May, 2003.
