UPT Summer Enrichment Program Offers Group

Discounts and Individual Scholarships

TITUSVILLE, May 5 - The recent funding provided by the John Nesbit Rees and Sarah Henne Rees Charitable Foundation allows the University of Pittsburgh at Titusville Summer Enrichment Program to offer individual scholarships as well as group discounts to local schools.

At least five students will be required to qualify for the group discount which includes an additional 15% discount for each student (however, a minimum of $25 is required for all students who attend a one week program).  Teachers who submit applications should include their contact information.

According to Dr. Ping Furlan, the program coordinator, the teachers will receive certificates of appreciation.  Teachers who send in more than ten applications within one grade will also receive a chemistry kit with supplies and instructions to conduct over ten different demonstrations.  The chemistry kits will be presented to the winning teachers in the fall.

The UPT Summer Enrichment Program for students in Grades 5-8 has been meeting and exceeding its participants’ expectation since its inception in 1998.  The program strives to expose students to different academic subjects by means of demonstrations, hands-on projects, laboratory work, and fun sports activities.  Through their direct participation, observations, and experimentation, students experience the excitement of discovery and gain additional understanding and appreciation of a variety of subjects.  The program also offers a place to meet new friends and provides an introduction to the college environment.

This year the program offers two day camps:  June 6-10 and June 13-17.  The week of June 6-10 includes computer programming, weather, human biology, sports, and web page classes.  The week of June 13-17 includes chemistry, poetry, math, sports, and web page classes.

Students who register by May 15, 2005 will receive a 10% discount.  Scholarships will be awarded based on academic merit and financial need.  Applications for scholarships must be received by May 15, 2005.

For more information and an application, please visit the program web site at: http://www.upt.pitt.edu, or contact Dr. Furlan at 827-4425.
