SUMMER ENRICHMENT PROGRAM PROMISES "SEEING" AND
"DOING" FOR KIDS IN GRADES 6-9

Titusville, May 13 - Students in
grades six through nine can begin planning for
UPT’s Summer Enrichment Camps. The University
of Pittsburgh at Titusville offers the Summer
Enrichment Program every year under the
direction of Dr. Ping Furlan, associate
professor of chemistry.
Applications received by June 15
will receive a ten percent discount.
Scholarships based on academic merits and
financial needs are made available through the
John Nesbit Rees/Sarah Henne Rees Charitable
Foundation. Scholarship applications also must
be received by June 15.
This year, Summer Enrichment is
offering two day camps running simultaneously
the week of July 19-23. Both camps include
Chemistry, Mouse, Math, Poetry, Sports and Web
Page classes.
In Mouse Camp (Dr. Margaret Peaslee,
professor of biology), students will study the
growth and behavior of lab mice and work with
Excel, building 2-D and 3-D mazes.
In Chemistry Camp (Dr. Ping Furlan, associate
professor of chemistry), students will learn to
make new substances, discover their properties
and explore their uses. Topics will include
metals and nonmetals, household acids and bases,
unknown identification, artistic paints,
polymers, UV imprints, water purifications and
much more.
In Poetry Camp (Dr. Herb Kitson, professor of
English), students will read and analyze famous
poetry, learn what makes good poetry, brainstorm
and write their own
poetry, learn about various revision techniques,
publish their poems online or in booklets,
and/or send them out to a poetry contest.
In Math Camp (Mr. Dennis L’Huillier,
instructor of mathematics), students will
explore topics including routine problems with
Euler Circuits, spiral growth in nature, fractal
geometry and mathematical puzzles on the
internet.
In Sports Camp (Mr. Tim Sneeringer,
assistant instructor of physical education),
students will learn the fine points of
basketball, volleyball, racquetball,
weightlifting and other sports games.
Each day camp will run from 9a.m. –
4 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 10a.m.
-12p.m. or 2p.m.-4p.m. on Fridays. Cost is
$135.00. Lunch is not provided.
