UPT STUDENTS RECOGNIZED AT ANNUAL

"DAY OF POETRY"

TITUSVILLE, April 27 --  In 1983, Dr. Herb Kitson, Professor of English at the University of Pittsburgh at Titusville, organized the first “Day of Poetry” to recognize students’ creative poetic works.  Through the years it developed into a collaborative effort between the University of Pittsburgh at Titusville and the Titusville Area School District.

“Day of Poetry” also acquired strong supporters and sponsors during the last 18 years:  University of Pittsburgh at Titusville, Titusville Council on the Arts, Pennsylvania Council on the Arts, John Nesbit Rees/Sarah Henne Rees Charitable Foundation, Benson Memorial Library, and Titusville High School English Department.

This annual event inspires students of all ages to develop their writing skills and express themselves in creative poetry form at the same time.  Students from first grade through college submit poems for consideration.  Awards are made in several age categories for first, second and third place, as well as honorable mention.

This year’s Day of Poetry was held in the Haskell Memorial Library Auditorium on Monday, April 23.  Dr. Kitson and Lynn Cressman, a Titusville Senior High School English teacher, served as masters-of-ceremony for the evening.  Students read their poems, received certificates of achievement and a booklet containing copies of their poems.  The winners also were presented with medals – gold, silver and bronze.

UPT students to receive awards and honors this year included:  Ben Patterson, First Place for “Burned and Broken”; Kyle Lamont, Second Place for “You”; Patricia Jeffers, Third Place for “Seven”; and Honorable Mentions to Nellie G. Browning for “Call Me Beautiful”; Amy L. Bills for “The Park Bench”; and Morgan Walker for “The ‘To Do’ List”.
