TITUSVILLE, Oct. 31 -- The Pittsburgh Reed Trio, part of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, will perform at the University of Pittsburgh at Titusville on Wednesday, November 12, at 7:30 p.m. in Boomer’s in the J. Curtis McKinney II Student Union.

The trio consists of Scott Bell, James Rodgers and Ron Samuels.  Under the direction of Scott Bell, the trio brings an impressive background of training and experience.

Bell joined the Pittsburgh Symphony as substitute second oboe in September of 1992 and became a permanent member in September 1993.  Prior to moving to Pittsburgh, Bell was a member of the Hartford Symphony, the New Orleans Symphony and the Orquesta Sinfónica de Veracruz (México).  He has also made appearances with the Atlanta, Milwaukee and Savannah symphonies.

Bell finished his last two years of high school as a scholarship student at the Interlochen Arts Academy.  He attended the Cleveland Institute of Music where he was a student of John Mack.  While a student at the Cleveland Institute, Bell played with the Akron Symphony and substituted with the Cleveland Orchestra under then Music Director Lorin Maazel.  Bell was a concerto competition winner both at the Cleveland Institute of Music and the Music Academy of the West in Santa Barbara, California.  He also has performed with the Hartford and New Orleans symphony orchestras.

Over the past several summers, Bell has played with the Santa Fe Opera, Glimmerglass Opera and the Waterloo Music Festival.  In 1982, Bell became the first oboist to win first prize in the Fernand Gillet Double Reed competition.  In October 1996, Bell performed as guest soloist with the Southeast Iowa Symphony.

Bell is on the faculty at Carnegie Mellon University and also teaches privately.

James Rodgers (bassoon, contrabassoon) is Principal Contrabassoonist with the Pittsburgh Symphony, a position he has held since September 2001.  Former positions include the Houston Symphony, Colorado Symphony, Florida Orchestra and Jacksonville Symphony.  He has participated in the following summer activities: Grand Tetons Music Festival, Cabrillo Festival, Colorado Music Festival, National Orchestral Institute and Tanglewood Music Festival.

Rodgers has studied bassoon with Andrew Radford, Norman Herzberg and Benjamin Kamins and contrabassoon with Gregg Henegar.  An avid early music enthusiast, he likes to perform on baroque bassoon and dulcian whenever possible.

He lives in Oakdale, Pennsylvania, with his wife, Sue, a clarinetist and dietitian/diabetes educator.

Ron Samuels was appointed 2nd clarinetist of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra at the start of the 2001-02 season.  Previously, he served as principal clarinetist of the Toledo Symphony Orchestra for sixteen seasons.

A native of San Francisco, Samuels graduated from the University of Southern California where he studied with Mitchell Lurie and where he has frequently returned as a guest lecturer.  A year after graduation, he won a position with the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra where he played for six seasons.

Samuels has appeared as soloist with the Toledo Symphony Orchestra on several occasions, as well as with the San Diego Symphony and the Wisconsin Chamber Orchestra.  During the 1997 season, he was a guest principal clarinetist with the Minnesota Orchestra.  He has recorded contemporary chamber music for Opus One Records, Hearts of Space Records, and a solo CD for KOCH International Classics, featuring French repertoire and highlighted by the premiere recording of an early 19th century concerto by Charles Duvernoy.

Currently on the faculty of Duquesne University, Samuels has been a guest lecturer at the University of Michigan, University of Wisconsin, Central and Eastern Michigan Universities, Bowling Green State University, California State University at Humboldt and at the Interlochen Arts Academy.
