PITTSBURGH REED TRIO TO PERFORM AT UPT ON

TITUSVILLE, Oct. 31 -- The Pittsburgh
Reed Trio, part of the Pittsburgh Symphony
Orchestra, will perform at the University of
Pittsburgh at Titusville on Wednesday, November
12, at 7:30 p.m. in Boomer’s in the J. Curtis
McKinney II Student Union.
The trio consists of Scott Bell, James Rodgers
and Ron Samuels. Under the direction of Scott
Bell, the trio brings an impressive background
of training and experience.
Bell joined the Pittsburgh Symphony as
substitute second oboe in September of 1992 and
became a permanent member in September 1993.
Prior to moving to Pittsburgh, Bell was a member
of the Hartford Symphony, the New Orleans
Symphony and the Orquesta Sinfónica de Veracruz
(México). He has also made appearances with the
Atlanta, Milwaukee and Savannah symphonies.
Bell finished his last two years of high school
as a scholarship student at the Interlochen Arts
Academy. He attended the Cleveland Institute of
Music where he was a student of John Mack.
While a student at the Cleveland Institute, Bell
played with the Akron Symphony and substituted
with the Cleveland Orchestra under then Music
Director Lorin Maazel. Bell was a concerto
competition winner both at the Cleveland
Institute of Music and the Music Academy of the
West in Santa Barbara, California. He also has
performed with the Hartford and New Orleans
symphony orchestras.
Over the past several summers, Bell has played
with the Santa Fe Opera, Glimmerglass Opera and
the Waterloo Music Festival. In 1982, Bell
became the first oboist to win first prize in
the Fernand Gillet Double Reed competition. In
October 1996, Bell performed as guest soloist
with the Southeast Iowa Symphony.
Bell is on the faculty at Carnegie Mellon
University and also teaches privately.
James Rodgers (bassoon, contrabassoon) is
Principal Contrabassoonist with the Pittsburgh
Symphony, a position he has held since September
2001. Former positions include the Houston
Symphony, Colorado Symphony, Florida Orchestra
and Jacksonville Symphony. He has participated
in the following summer activities: Grand Tetons
Music Festival, Cabrillo Festival, Colorado
Music Festival, National Orchestral Institute
and Tanglewood Music Festival.
Rodgers has studied bassoon with Andrew Radford,
Norman Herzberg and Benjamin Kamins and
contrabassoon with Gregg Henegar. An avid early
music enthusiast, he likes to perform on baroque
bassoon and dulcian whenever possible.
He lives in Oakdale, Pennsylvania, with his
wife, Sue, a clarinetist and dietitian/diabetes
educator.
Ron Samuels
was appointed 2nd clarinetist of the Pittsburgh
Symphony Orchestra at the start of the 2001-02
season. Previously, he served as
principal clarinetist
of the Toledo Symphony Orchestra for sixteen
seasons.
A native of San Francisco, Samuels graduated
from the University of Southern California where
he studied with Mitchell Lurie and where he has
frequently returned as a guest lecturer. A year
after graduation, he won a position with the Los
Angeles Chamber Orchestra where he played for
six seasons.
Samuels has appeared as soloist with the Toledo
Symphony Orchestra on several occasions, as well
as with the San Diego Symphony and the Wisconsin
Chamber Orchestra. During the 1997 season, he
was a guest principal clarinetist with the
Minnesota Orchestra. He has recorded
contemporary chamber music for Opus One Records,
Hearts of Space Records, and a solo CD for KOCH
International Classics, featuring French
repertoire and highlighted by the premiere
recording of an early 19th century concerto by
Charles Duvernoy.
Currently on the faculty of Duquesne University,
Samuels has been a guest lecturer at the
University
of
Michigan,
University of Wisconsin, Central and Eastern
Michigan Universities, Bowling Green State
University, California State University at
Humboldt and at the
Interlochen
Arts Academy.
Recently named the principal clarinetist of the
summertime
Peninsula Music Festival in Door County,
Wisconsin, Samuels has also been the principal
clarinetist of the Grand Tetons Music Festival,
the Colorado Music Festival and the Santa Fe
Opera.
