TITUSVILLE,
Aug. 16 -- Margaret
H. Peaslee, Ph.D., Professor of Biology
and Vice President for Academic Affairs at
the University of Pittsburgh at
Titusville, recently presented a paper at
the North American Conference of the
Czechoslovak Society of Arts and Sciences
at the University of Nebraska.
Her paper, “Bozena Nemcova
Remembered,” explores the life of
Nemcova, a Czech writer in the 19th
century who was persecuted by the Austrian
monarchy for her strong support of Czech
nationalism and personal freedom. |
Peaslee
became interested in Nemcova while researching
F.M. Klacel, teacher of Mendel, and J.G. Mendel,
the father of genetics.
Nemcova was a close personal friend of
Klacel and his family.
Nemcova’s
most famous book, Babicka (The
Grandmother), tells of country life in Bohemia
during the early 19th century.
Peaslee
and two other UPT professors will conduct a
study abroad program in the Czech Republic in
May 2002.
