UPT FACULTY TO DIRECT STUDY ABROAD

IN CZECH REPUBLIC IN 2002

TITUSVILLE, June 11 -- Three University of Pittsburgh at Titusville professors will travel to the Czech Republic in May 2002 to conduct a study abroad program for UPT students.  Dr. Margaret Hermanek Peaslee, vice president for academic affairs and professor of biology, Dr. Linda A. Winkler, associate professor of anthropology and biology, and Ms. Cynthia J. Andes, assistant professor of humanities and English, are busy making plans for next year’s trip.

As part of their preparation, Peaslee and Andes attended a dedication ceremony on May 31 at the Dominion Tower Plaza in Pittsburgh of the official state historical marker commemorating the signing of the Pittsburgh Agreement.

According to Peaslee, the Agreement was signed near this site on May 31, 1918, and provided the impetus for President Woodrow Wilson to champion Czechoslovak independence at the end of World War I.

Thomas Garrigue Masaryk, who later became the first president of Czechoslovakia, was also one of the signatories.

The historical marker will be installed at the corner of Penn and Seventh Avenues.
