TITUSVILLE, June 27 - The University of
Pittsburgh at Titusville sponsored a two week
study abroad program for 16 college students in
the Czech Republic from May 4 through May 16.
Students studied genetics, business, or art
under the direction of Dr. Margaret Peaslee,
Professor of Biology, Dr. Nancy Tress, Assistant
Professor of Biology, Ms. Melanie Anderson,
Assistant Professor of Business and Ms. Cynthia
Andes, Assistant Professor of English.
Students also had the opportunity to visit the
Czech Stock Exchange, the Czech National Bank,
CMC Graduate School, Allyn
International
Services,
Inc,
the
Museum
of Modern Art,
Charles University Medical School, as well as
attend many cultural activities in Prague.
Students visited several popular sites in
Prague that showcase beautiful European
architecture, including the Charles Bridge,
Prague Castle, Vyšehrad Castle, and the Staré
Město (Old
Town).
Masaryk University in the city of
Brno
worked with business and genetics students to
experience a Czech university class, as well as
visit medical and veterinary facilities.
Students visited the Mendel Museum and monastery
in
Brno,
where Johann Gregor Mendel, the father of
genetics, did his early research. The hotel
provided an excellent night view of
Špilberk
Castle, and students had the opportunity to
visit there as well.
The city of
Olomouc
provided opportunities for students to visit
Šternberk castle, the six fountains which grace
the two central town squares of Olomouc, and
many beautiful cathedrals and churches.
“Many lessons
extended beyond the normal classroom, such as
communicating in another language, learning how
to use the metro, tram, bus and train system,
experiencing another culture, and sampling new
foods,” says Anderson. “It was a wonderful
experience and we are looking forward to another
study abroad trip in May 2007.”
