Grim Satire of Life in
a Mental Institution -
A Classic
 |
TITUSVILLE, Mar. 21 - The last event of
the 2004-2005 Spotlight Series promises to
deliver a memorable evening of theatre with the
classic play, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest,
and class-act performances by a talented
ensemble of actors, including students from the
University of Pittsburgh at Titusville, as well
as talent from local and regional communities.
The cast is comprised of UPT students Jacob
Bunner in the lead role as R.P. McMurphy,
William Thompson and Kevin Easley as Aides
Warren and Williams, and community actors Ryan
Eggleston, Paul Ferrick (Erie), Tim Snyder, Jeff
Ottney, Nick Keely (Oil City), Chantel Blose,
Stephanie Fullerton, Rich Lane, Debbie Carr,
Katie Gafner, and Bruce Shrout.
In the play, R. P. McMurphy is a charming rogue
who contrives to serve a short sentence in a
mental institution instead of in prison, but
finds himself in a head-to-head clash with the
fierce and dominating head nurse, Nurse Ratched.
With McMurphy's anti-authority plan, he manages
to accomplish what the medical profession has
been unable to do in twelve years. He
makes a presumed deaf and dumb inmate talk, and
he leads other patients out of introversion.
During the ensuing revolt of the inmates,
McMurphy is threated with shock treatments and
the ultimate correction, a frontal lobotomy.
This is a must-see play that does more than
entertain by raising audience awareness of an
existence most of us have been fortunate enough
to avoid. Don't miss this one!
