COMPLIANCE FEATURED SPEAKER AT ACADEMIC CONVOCATION

Randy P.Juhl, Ph.D., Vice Chancellor for Research Conduct and Compliance and Professor of Pharmaceutical Sciences, will speak at UPT's 15th Annual Academic Convocation on August 29 at 2:00 p.m. on the lawn of McKinney Hall.

TITUSVILLE, Aug. 13 -- The University of Pittsburgh at Titusville will hold its fifteenth annual Academic Convocation on Thursday, August 29, at 2:00 p.m. on the veranda of McKinney Hall.

Randy P. Juhl, Ph.D., Vice Chancellor for Research Conduct and Compliance and Professor of Pharmaceutical Sciences for the University of Pittsburgh, will deliver the keynote address.  Juhl joined Pitt in 1979 as chair of the Department of Pharmacy Practice.  In 1986 he was named Dean of the School of Pharmacy, a position he held for 16 years.

During his tenure as Dean, the school converted its entry level practitioner degree program from the Bachelor’s level to the Pharm.D., instituted advanced practice residencies in conjunction with the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center and other partners, developed an innovative clinical scientist Ph.D. program, and increased the school’s endowment more than tenfold.  The school also attained a top ten rank among schools and colleges of pharmacy as measured by grant support from the NIH (currently #6).

In July of 2002, Dr. Juhl accepted an invitation from Chancellor Mark Nordenberg to join the University’s senior leadership as Vice Chancellor for Research Conduct and Compliance.  His responsibilities include the administrative oversight of the University’s Institutional Review Board (IRB), the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC), the Radiation Safety Program, the Recombinant DNA Office and components of the University’s conflict of interest reporting and monitoring functions.

Juhl’s research included the effects of disease states and other conditions on the pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of drugs.  He has authored or co-authored over 70 manuscripts, abstracts and books on these and related topics.

Juhl served as President of the Academy of Pharmaceutical Research and Science in the American Pharmaceutical Association in 1992-93.  From 1992-96, he chaired the newly created FDA Advisory Committee on Non-Prescription Drugs.  The committee advises the FDA on a range of issues related to non-prescription drugs, including the Rx-to-OTC switch process.  In 1998, Juhl was appointed chairman of the Pharmacy Compounding Advisory Committee for the FDA.

Juhl received his A.A. degree from Waldorf College in 1968, his B.S., M.S. and Ph.D. in pharmacy from the University of Iowa in 1972, 1974, and 1976, respectively.  He has been honored as a distinguished alumnus of both Waldorf College (1994) and the University of Iowa College of Pharmacy (2000).

Currently, Juhl consults for several companies and organizations that deal with self-medication and the Rx-to-OTC switch process and is a frequent speaker on a variety of FDA-related regulatory topics.

During the convocation, an induction ceremony will be held for new members of Phi Theta Kappa, an honorary fraternity for two-year colleges.

UPT faculty in full academic dress will proceed to McKinney Hall from the J. Curtis McKinney II Student Union to the tunes of the bagpipe, played by Eugene Zimmerman.

The public is invited to attend the ceremony and reception immediately following.  In the event of rain, the convocation will relocate to Henne Auditorium in the Broadhurst Science Center.
