Chemistry Club Celebrates National Chemistry
Week
with
All Ages at Erie Millcreek Mall
TITUSVILLE, Nov. 1 - Twenty
members of the University of Pittsburgh at
Titusville’s Chemistry Club, along with their
advisor Dr. Ping Furlan, devoted Saturday,
October 22, to celebrating 2005 National
Chemistry Week (NCW) with the public at the Erie
Millcreek Mall.
Club members brought their chemistry week
banners, posters, as well as “Safety Milli” and
“Dr. Avogadro Mole” (two walkaround chemistry
characters created this year for NCW). The
design and construction of the walk around
chemistry characters “Milli” and “Mole” was
funded through a 2005 American Chemical Society
Student Affiliates Innovative Activities Grant (IAG).
Over 20 hands-on activities reflecting the 2005
NCW theme, “The Joy of Toys,” were presented to
mall patrons of all ages. More than 300 helium
balloons were distributed during the program.
Kids and adults alike enjoyed playing and
working with various chemistry toys while
learning the chemistry behind the toys.
This is the largest NCW annual outreach event
sponsored by the Erie Section of American
Chemical Society. Participants included ACS
student affiliates chapters from Allegheny
College, Edinboro University, Gannon University,
Mercyhurst College, Penn State–Behrend, and
UPT. UPT was recognized with a “Salutes to
Excellence” by ACS for its long term commitment
to the program.
The program received coverage on WICU-Channel 12
news on Saturday evening where UPT NCW displays
were the highlight of the program. UPT
professor Furlan coordinated this year’s event
along with Dr. Thewes (Edinboro), Dr. Chitester
(Gannon), and Ms. Halmi (Behrend).
Special recognition is given to the following
UPT student affiliates for their outstanding
participation in the Erie Mall program and their
impressive representation of UPT Chemistry Club
and UPT campus: Tom Krupa (05 ACS IAG
director), David Groscost, Devin Beers, Allison
Carver, Katrina Craig, Kyle Anderson, Autumn Aul,
Christan Martone, Humza Naqiv, Peter Liu, John
Persons, John Smith, Mike Toomalatai, Alicia
Stallard, Emily Mills, Cassie English, Andy
Wright, Amanda Addo, Sharni-Kaye Davis, and
Kristin Kurcczka.
Special thanks also go to the following students
for their remarkable “behind scenes” efforts at
helping out with the NCW display at the Erie
Mall: Tom Krupa, Valerie McGuire, Kelly
Nicewonger, David Groscost, Brandon Humberger,
Shivani Singh, and Josh Hoffman.
A final thanks go to Mrs. Charlotte Randall and
UPT professor Cindy Andes for supervising the
“Milli” and “Mole” project.

Members of Erie Section of ACS invited their
friends, “Safety Milli” and “Dr. Avogadro Mole,”
to help with the section’s celebration of the
“Joy of Toys” at the Erie Millcreek Mall during
the 2005 National Chemistry Week.
