UPT CHEMISTRY CLUB AWARDED

ACS INNOVATIVE ACTIVITIES GRANT

UPT's 2004-2005 Chemistry Club once again was awarded an Innovative Activities Grant by the American Chemical Society.

TITUSVILLE, Oct. 7 - Once again, the University of Pittsburgh at Titusville Chemistry Club has been awarded an Innovative Activities Grant.  Their 2004-05 project, “Artful Chemistry and Cool Science in Elementary Classrooms,” will be carried out in partnership with Hydetown and Cherrytree Elementary Schools.

Since 1977, the IAG Program has provided funds to American Chemical Society Student Chapters for various research and community-oriented projects.  For the 2004-2005 academic year, the ACS Society Committee on Education selected 12 chapters to receive awards.  The UPT chapter is proud to be among the winning chapters that constitute the top 1% of all ACS Student Chapters.

UPT Club members will visit Hydetown and Cherrytree Elementary School classrooms next spring with art-related projects and product-oriented activities.  The goal of the project is to enrich science classrooms in local elementary schools, to relate chemistry to everyday life experience, and to increase students’ appreciation and understanding of chemistry through a series of hands-on approaches.  It also fosters club members’ professional development through teaching chemistry in the community.
