MELANIE ANDERSON NAMED SAM M. WALTON

FREE ENTERPRISE FELLOW

Melanie O. Anderson, Assistant Vice President of Academic Affairs, Assistant Professor of Business, and SIFE Team advisor, was named a Sam M. Walton Free Enterprise Fellow.  The award is named after the founder and Chairman of Wal-Mart stores.

TITUSVILLE, Oct. 21 - Melanie O. Anderson of Franklin has been named a Sam M. Walton Free Enterprise Fellow for the Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE) Team at the University of Pittsburgh at Titusville.

Anderson is an assistant professor of business and advisor to the SIFE Team.  Under her direction, the SIFE Team coordinated 17 projects this year, including E-SIFE and SAFE.

With E-SIFE, the Team helped fourth grade students at Hydetown, Pleasantville, and Main Street Elementary Schools set up and operate school stores.  The elementary students learned about economics (supply and demand), product selection, marketing, public relations, sales, accounting, inventory and customer service.

SAFE, or Seniors Against Fraud via Education, provided important information to senior citizens to help protect them against mail, telephone, internet and other types of fraud.

The fellowship was created in 1990 by the Wal-Mart Foundation and is named for Samuel More Walton, founder and Chairman of Wal-Mart Stores, Inc.  More than 700 Sam Walton Fellows nationwide train and motivate more than 15,000 SIFE Team members every year.

“We are proud that the Walton family invited SIFE to use Mr. Walton’s name to give the Free Enterprise Fellows a standard by which to lead and be recognized,” says Alvin Rohrs, President and CEO of SIFE.  “The Sam M. Walton Fellows inspire their students and are America’s most effective teachers of free enterprise.”

SIFE is active on more than 1,600 college and university campuses in 40 countries.  The organization encourages students to take what they are learning in the classroom and apply it to real-life situations, using their knowledge to better their communities through educational outreach projects.

Founded in 1975, SIFE is a non-profit organization that works in partnership with business and higher education to teach college and university students leadership, teamwork and communication skills through learning, practicing and teaching the principles of free enterprise.
