UPT PROFESSOR TO PRESENT AT COMPUTER CONFERENCE

Melanie Anderson, assistant professor of business, will present "Web Accessibility" at ASCUE Conference in June.

Titusville, May 25 - Melanie O. Anderson, assistant professor of business and assistant vice president for academic affairs at the University of Pittsburgh at Titusville, will present a paper and speak at the Association of Small Computer Users in Education Conference, June 6-10.

Anderson’s focus is “Web Accessibility.”  According to Anderson, web sites today should meet web accessibility guidelines to comply with a host of regulations and guidelines for people with disabilities. Resent estimates state that 20 percent of the U. S. population has a disability and that 10 percent of the on-line population is disabled. Similar issues with web accessibility are also applicable to the older segment of the population.

Anderson’s paper and presentation will review current regulations and guidelines, including the Web Accessibility Initiative, the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines and the U.S. Section 508 requirements.  Software to evaluate web accessibility will be reviewed and demonstrated.

Anderson states, “Web Usage is increasing rapidly to include many everyday tasks such as getting the news, shopping, job searching, filing our taxes, etc.  Reasonable accommodations should be made to make the web accessible to those with visual, hearing, motor or physical, and cognitive disabilities.”
