CONFERENCE IN SOUTH CAROLINA

Melanie O. Anderson, Assistant Professor of Business and Director of Continuing Education, presented a paper at the 35th Association of Small Computer Users in Education Conference in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.

TITUSVILLE, June 21 -- Melanie O. Anderson of Franklin, Assistant Professor of Business and Director of Continuing Education at the University of Pittsburgh at Titusville, presented a paper on June 12th at the 35th Association of Small Computer Users in Education Conference in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.

Her topic, Blackboard 5:  Web-based Course Experiences, reviewed web-based courses taught at UPT using the Blackboard software tool.  Computer Literacy, Introduction to Medical Terminology and Personal Health were taught exclusively on the web, requiring attendance in only one to three meetings (initial class meeting and exams).

UPT instructors used a variety of web-based instructional techniques:  Word or HTML files for syllabi and lecture notes; links to web addresses; PowerPoint files; graphics and video files; communication via e-mail, digital drop box, discussion boards, and chat rooms.  In her presentation, Anderson reviewed the methods of using these tools, as well as roadblocks, successes, failures, likes/dislikes by students, and learning results.

Anderson says, “Web-based courses are new to many instructors, and are not right for every course.  My paper and presentation reviewed the courses offered at UPT and provided feedback to other instructors at the conference.”
