UPT Students Share Kwanzaa Tradition with Local Brownie Troops

Kwanzaa Celebration

TITUSVILLE, Dec. 13 - Members of the University of Pittsburgh at Titusville’s Diversity Club gave a presentation on the African-American holiday of “Kwanzaa” to the local Brownie Troops on Thursday, December 1, in the UPT Student Union.

Kwanzaa was started in 1966 as a way for African-American families to connect with one another.  Although not recognized officially as a national holiday, the Kwanzaa celebration begins on December 26 and lasts until January 2.  Each day celebrates one of seven principles most highly valued by African-American families.

Through participation in this program, the Brownie troops of Titusville had the opportunity to learn about the principals of Kwanzaa and were exposed to an important aspect of the African-American culture.
