FAQ

Do I have to do volunteer/clinical work to get into the PTA Program?

Yes, forty hours of volunteer work are required and must be completed prior to beginning the PTA technical education course. You can do your volunteer work at any physical therapy clinic. Call and let the clinic know that you are attending the PTA Program and that you are required to do 40 hours of volunteer work in preparation.

Why do I need to do volunteer work?

It is very important that you have a good understanding of the profession you are about to enter. Volunteering allows you to see exactly what physical therapists and physical therapist assistants do on a day-to-day basis. Additionally, you will be exposed to the healthcare environment and the professional behaviors required of PTs and PTAs.

Are there insurance or specific health requirements for this program?

Yes. You are required to have liability insurance, which can be purchased prior to your clinical affiliations for a nominal fee. You are also required to have health insurance and up-to-date immunizations including tetanus, PPD, hepatitis and others. Finally, there is a list of essential functions that you must be able to perform in order to participate in the PTA Program. If you have a disability and are unsure of your ability to complete the PTA Program, please contact the PTA Office for a complete listing of these essential functions.

Do the classes have to be taken in the order in which they are listed on the PTA handout?

Many of the general education classes can be completed prior to the start of the core PTA courses. You must achieve a minimum “C-” grade in all of the courses prior to proceeding into the technical component of the PTA Program. Students are required to maintain at least a 2.5 GPA average in the PTA curriculum and an overall GPA of 2.0 each semester.

Where do I do my clinical rotations?

The University of Pittsburgh has clinical affiliates throughout the United States. Every effort is made to place you in the clinical site of your choice, provided it it in your best educational interest. You will be responsible for your own transportation, housing, meals, etc. while completing your clinical.

What is the job market like for PTAs?

The Bureau of Occupational Labor Statistics cites PTA as an area that will grow over the next eight years.  Additionally, the knowledge gained in the PTA Program is applicable to other health-related careers.
