There are many different brands, styles, and types of bikes that people use when extreme mountain biking.

First off there are basically three different styles of bikes.

1) Downhill / Freeride

2) Mountain / Climbing

3) Cross Country Racing

 

Probably the best brand of bike for mountain biking would be Cannondale.

The Gemini Series bike shown above is the bike that I would ride if I had $3,000 + to spend.

 

Another good brand of mountain bike is Trek.

Shown above is a Trek bike of the Bruiser Series.

 

Now I know not everyone has a thousand or so dollars to spend a bike.

So if you have a limited budget you could get a Huffy, Next, or Mongoose

at Wal-Mart anywhere from $75 to $300.
